HOW TO BECOME A BIOSAFETY OFFICER

The revised guidelines for the licensing of clinical laboratories in the Philippines mandates the designation of a medical technologist as a biosafety officer. However, very few professionals have an in-depth training and expertise in the field of biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management to fill the need for such a position. As such, it is essential that the roles and responsibilities of a biosafety officer is well-elucidated. This lecture will present the international guidance documents pertaining to a biosafety officer as well as the local legal framework and regulations in the Philippine context. Moreso, the essential characteristics of a biosafety officer will be discussed in-depth and potential avenues as a biosafety officer.

Specific Objectives:

  1. To expand the knowledge of medical technologists on the vital role of biosafety officers in the clinical laboratory.
  2. To provide insights on the role of a biosafety officer in the clinical laboratory.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. To introduce the conceptual and legal framework for biosafety officers in the Philippines
  2. To discuss the essential characteristics that must be possessed by a biosafety officer
  3. To provide details on how to embark on a journey to become a biosafety officer

  1. Biorisk Matrix for Dual-Use Industries Workshop (Entry and Mid-Level Individuals, Lab Managers and Biosecurity Managers) June 6, 2022

    This workshop and follow-on mentoring opportunity for biosecurity experts seeking to increase their awareness of biorisk management and threat assessment. This workshop will cover: 

    ·   Understanding of the current biological threat environment for dual-use industries in southeast Asia.
    ·   Emerging threats and the types of issues/impacts they may cause on the end-user’s sector.
    ·   Introduction to the Biorisk Matrix Tool, including practical application of the tool for a range of threat scenarios.
    ·   Identifying mitigation measures for different threat scenarios. 

    Following the workshop, attendees will take part in a mentorship program whereby the workshop organizers will teach attendees how to use the Biorisk Matrix Tool that will be issued to them and their institutions.

·   Emerging threats and the types of issues/impacts they may cause on the end-user’s sector.
·   Introduction to the Threat Forecasting Tool, including practical application of the tool for a range of threat scenarios.
·   Identifying mitigation measures for different threat scenarios. 

Following the workshop, attendees will take part in a mentorship program whereby the workshop organizers will teach attendees how to use the Threat Forecasting Tool that will be issued to them and their institutions.
